Having well-water can be a great benefit. You are in control of your own water source, you know where it is coming from, and what goes in the water for treating it. You do, however, also have the responsibility to make sure that the water is not going to be harmful for you and your family. Unless you send in a sample to a lab, you will not actually know if your water is clean or not.

There are some things you can do to keep contaminants away from your well. For example, you should never spill any type of chemicals on the ground anywhere near your well, since they can seep down into the water. This means that parking cars or other machinery on top of the well is a no-no.

You also should make sure that your well is at least 50 feet away from your septic system, since a contamination from your septic system could bring severe gastrointestinal disease.
