With the many benefits to having ceramic tile, its easy to see why it is a popular option for many.  Its hard wearing, durable and easy to clean.

Although ceramic tile is hardy, like most things in the home, they will sometimes need maintenance.  What kind of problems could we see with ceramic tile flooring?

A very common problem is cracks in the tile.  There are a number of reasons this can happen.  General wear and tear could be a factor.  Also, if you happen to live in an area that deals with extremes in temperature, as the home expands and contracts this can cause the tile to do the same thus causing cracks.  Another issue could be that the tile was not installed correctly in the first place.  While small cracks can be fixed by filling them with a little grout, cracks that are too big will mean that the tile needs to be replaced.

A very common maintenance issue with ceramic tile is that the grout may start to become discolored or begin to crumble away. A reason this happens is that the seal has either worn away or not been applied correctly and so the grout starts to absorb moisture.  You will see this a lot more in areas with a lot of moisture such as bathrooms.  With time, if the grout becomes too bad, it will need to be removed and redone.

Sometimes if the tiles have not been installed correctly, they can be uneven.  If you have had tile put down and notice this, you will probable need to have it done again.

So, as we can see, ceramic tile is a good and durable option, but will likely need maintenance somewhere down the line.
