If you have children, you have probably needed to stop them from putting things in a wall receptacle more than once. It is just a natural thing for children to be curious, and they have probably observed you using outlets many times. If they were to stick anything conductive into a receptacle, however, they could be seriously injured or even killed!

Many choose to put plastic outlet covers to prevent this from happening, but these aren’t always a reliable method to protect your children. If your child is really intent on getting into the outlet, he/she can successfully remove the cover, and it’s also possible that you could forget to put it back again after using the outlet.

Instead, you should make the investment to install tamper resistant receptacles. These are designed with a spring loaded shutter which will prevent anything besides a two-pronged contact to be inserted. There needs to be even pressure on both sides of the outlet for it to open, and this should not cause inconvenience to you, while at the same time protecting your children.
