If your fridge has an ice maker, you will also find a water line that leads to your fridge. Depending on where your fridge is located, this can be a problem, since no one wants to have water lines going across doorways, and pulling new plumbing can be complicated and expensive. Usually, this means that unless your fridge is really close to your kitchen sink, or someone installed a waterline where it is located, you might not be able to hook it up. This is also important to remember if you want to move your fridge to a different location, since it will limit your options.

If your fridge needs repairs, you should first turn off the water supply to minimize the risk of a leak. It might take some searching before you can find the shutoff valve, however. If your fridge is connected near your sink, there might be a shutoff valve located underneath the sink, but this is not always the case.
