While it is necessary to have electricity in your kitchen and sometimes also in your bathroom, having outlets in these locations bring with it a risk. You might recognize these from the 2 button in the middle of the outlet for testing and resetting the outlet. They are designed to disconnect power as soon as unbalanced current is detected. This can be a lifesaver!
You should test your GFCI outlet every now and then to make sure they function properly. This can be done by connecting a simple device such as a lamp or something similar into the outlet and then pushing the test button. This will simulate an unbalanced current, which should lead to the reset button popping out. If this does not happen, you should stop using the outlet immediately and having it replaced by a qualified electrician.
