Water is essential for our life, and getting by without access to clean water in our home is hard to imagine. However, fresh water is a limited resource, and as fresh water supplies dwindle, water conservation is a wise course of action. Considering that the average American uses about 90 gallons of water per day, access to water might not always be as easy as it is today. If you are concerned about the environment and want to get into good water usage habits, pay attention to a few everyday tasks and you will lessen your usage.
The biggest culprit for water waste is usually your toilet. Older toilets could use as much as 7 gallons of water in a single flush, and on top of that, many older toilets will have minor leaks around the flushing mechanism that will constantly drain a small amount of water. Investing in a newer toilet that uses less water per flush is definitely worth it. Showers can also use a lot of water, so getting into the habit of taking efficient showers instead of long soaks could save quite a bit of water, especially if you’re a large family.
