In your basement, you might find steel pillars supporting your home. How do these work, and what are potential problems they might have?

The common name for them is adjustable steel columns. Many times, they are used when a home is remodelled, and extra support is needed for the changes made, but it is also possible that they are used in new construction.

Adjustable steel columns are hollow to allow them to be extended to the necessary height for installation. You will find a threaded adjustment mechanism that is used for changing the height.

What are some common defects?

The columns need to be covered with rust inhibitive paint. If there are any signs of rust on the poles, it is possible that they aren’t covered properly and should be replaced. The diameter of the pipe should not be less than 3 inches. It is important to note that determining what type of pole should be used needs to be determined by a structural engineer, since poles can buckle under the weight put on them.

It is also very important that the columns are straight with no more than 1 inch difference between the top and the bottom of the pole. It should be mechanically fastened into the floor below and the beam above.
