There are few things that are more disturbing than seeing the toilet water rising when trying to flush a toilet that is plugged. As unpleasant as that experience is, the task of dislodging a clog from a toilet is not as difficult as it might seem. Your best friend is a plunger, but it will only be useful if you know how to properly utilize it.
Before you start using the plunger, you should allow time for the water to recede, otherwise you will most likely just make a huge mess when it starts overflowing. You might even need to scoop some water out to make room for the motion of the water. You also shouldn’t plunge when there isn’t enough water in the toilet. Ideally it should be about halfway up the bowl. The plunger needs to seal well over the drain, and then you should pull and push while leaving this seal intact.
Never plunge after using chemicals on a clog, since this could cause the chemicals to splash back up in your face.
