Your windows are more than likely one of the biggest energy drains in your home. It is hard to ensure that your air doesn’t escape through the windows, especially in an older home. However, you can make sure that your windows are in as good repair as possible so that you minimize the energy loss.

Cracks around the window will let large amounts of air escape, they need to be sealed up well with caulk and weatherstripping. Take care to make the seal tight. If possible, shining a bright light from the opposite side of the window will let you see the cracks more easily.

A window with wooden frames can deteriorate to the point where it is no longer effectively stopping air. When fixing wood that has rot in it, it is very important to remove any traces of the rot. Since even a small amount of rot left behind will spread and cause more of the wood to deteriorate, you should dig out some of the healthy wood as well when cleaning it up.

Using epoxy wood filler will let you restore the window frame so it can hardly be noticed it was ever worked on.
