If you have a garbage disposal, then you have likely had a moment like many of us have: We stand hesitantly in front of our kitchen sink. A confused look on our face, and a hand full of broccoli. We stand there wondering "can I put this in my garbage disposal?"

Don't worry though, you are not alone. While there is not really a very long list of "this, but not that", there are some general rules that you can follow to make sure you aren't calling a plumber any time soon.

First of all, take a look at your garbage disposal. A bigger garbage disposal can obviously handle more than a smaller one. Don't know if you have a big disposal or not? Look up the make and model online and compare it to others.

The next thing is to try to keep things in your disposal to non-animal products (i.e. chicken, beef, etc). That is because the fat and bones that can be in there often jam the disposal, or clog the drain. You can get away with this sometimes, but it eventually comes back to haunt you later on.

And lastly, be careful with dense vegetables like carrots and broccoli. You will want to put this into your garbage disposal slowly and in small amounts. If you don't, the disposal makes a wad of this stuff and often clogs your drain.
