So you are getting ready to do some demolition work on your Victorian style home.. however, you’ve never dealt with plaster and lathe, so you don’t know exactly how to go about safely removing it. Have no fear, here are some tips and reminders to keep in mind when removing plaster from your walls.
First and foremost, you want to make sure you have all of your necessary personal protective equipment, i.e. your safety glasses, gloves, and a dust mask. When removed, the plaster can easily break apart into smaller, finer dust particles which can have a profound effect on your lungs in the future. By laying a tarp down all across the floor, you’ll catch the big, little, and finer chunks of plaster so that there is less cleanup work to do after the demo is done. It’s also advised that you put a tarp across your doorway, to keep any dust particles from escaping the room, and leaving windows open to get fresh air rolling through the room.
You also want to make sure when you are taking the plaster off the walls, that they tend to be bigger chunks and less small ones, simply to save yourself some heartache in the future. In addition, when you start taking off the plaster, that when you swing a hammer into the wall, that it isn’t just randomly, due to the fact that there could be hidden power cables or outlet cables behind the wall which could cause serious injury.
With all these things in mind, you are now ready to go out and start taking down some plaster with extreme prejudice!
