Whenever really cold weather hits, we all like to bundle up and stay warm. It is important, however, that you consider how the cold might be affecting your plumbing. Water pipes are easily affected by cold if they are not insulated. If it gets cold enough, even insulation might not be enough, especially if the pipes are located in an outer wall or an area that isn’t climate controlled, such as a crawlspace or basement.
Fortunately, with a little forethought, you can avoid catastrophic problems, such as a busted pipe leaking water into your home.
Whenever there is a serious cold snap expected, you can leave a couple of faucets trickling some water, since this will prevent it from freezing. You can also use fans to direct air from warmer areas into colder areas if there are pipes running there. In cases where you have a sink with a cabinet underneath it, you might want to leave the doors to the cabinet open so as to let warmer air in. This is especially important for sinks that are facing an outside wall.
