Living in an older home comes with many unique challenges. Many times the outside might look new after renovations and other projects, but inside of the walls, old fashioned wiring might still be hiding.
Unfortunately, sometimes you might not even know that it is a problem until it is too late. Even though the older wiring can work just fine for normal use, adding an appliance that puts a heavy load, or plugging in multiple appliances on the same circuit could overload it.
There are a few obsolete wiring standards that pose a greater risk. In very old houses, there might be knob and tube wiring, but this was discontinued in the 1930’s. There could also be aluminum wiring which has a higher risk of fire. Usually, you can recognize this by the abbreviation CA/ALR being printed on it, or just the word Aluminium.
Some of these systems need to be replaced by an electrician, and if you are looking into hiring one to either remove it or make some alterations to your electrical system, you should find one that has experience with these systems.
