What is the best type of roofing shingle? Well, that is a matter of debate, debate that basically comes down to architectural shingles vs 3-tab shingles.
Most of the debate comes down to the fact that architectural shingles tend to last a bit longer. The problem is that they also allow the roofer to hide issues better, and when problems do arise, they are harder to find and identify.
3-tab shingles have their own issues though. If they are not installed just right, they tend to fail a bit early. They are also a little bit thinner and less durable in some ways (depending on the brand and type of shingle).
Really, it comes down to your own personal preference. From a home inspection standpoint, if it works – it works.
