Sometimes we might find some substance that looks like mold in our home, but we don’t know for sure if it is. The best way to make sure is to send in a sample to a lab for testing, but you want to make sure that you don’t damage your home when removing a sample.

There is actually a simple method you can use, and it is called tape sampling. Using this is non-invasive, and it can be done with no expertise or training.

By using a strip of clear cellophane tape you can get a sample that will show both the severity of the contamination and what species of mold you are dealing with. It also minimizes the risk of releasing mold spores into the air.

The tape sample can be taped to the inside of a zip-lock bag and sent in to a lab for testing. Don’t fold the tape, since this will make it difficult to extract the spores from it.
