In certain regions of the U.S., you may find snakes either in your house or at least in your backyard. They can, of course, be a bother, maybe slithering around you when you're mowing your lawn, or maybe even just going into your basement to do laundry, and you find one. Of course, snakes can give you a good startle at first, but the next step is to determine if its poisonous or not. But how do you keep your house and backyard free of snakes?
Well, there are a couple things that you can do to cut down on the population, BUT, you won't get rid of every single snake in your backyard. Realizing this is the first step in protecting yourself. If its just garter snakes that appear to be bothering you, some simple things you can do are: gently spray the animal with a water house. This will give the snake an uncomfortable feeling, thus it will move along its merry way. Secondly, you can keep your backyard trimmed nice and tidy every week, because snakes absolutely love the tall grass and weeds, so by cutting down their shelter sources, they'll move on to a new spot.
For those snakes that have other small animals as a diet, removing their food source will force them to move on to another spot as well. This means, cutting back on mice, chipmunks, even squirrels. Just think of the food chain - cutting down on a food source, will cut down on the predator the next level up. Third, buying snake repellent in its liquid form will allow you to spray the outside of your house, and in surrounding areas, which will, in turn, make snakes think twice about going on your property.
Keeping these things in mind will allow you to be less cautious in your own backyard or basement, and you can continue on in your own home without fear of seeing a very uninvited guest.
