Seeing that bathrooms, by nature, are humid and warm environments, it is most important that they are fitted with a proper ventilation system which will effectively extract moisture and odor from the room.  Most bathroom ventilation systems are in the form of a fan fitted in the ceiling that is connected to a duct which should reach to come out to the exterior of the home.  There are, however, some reasons why this type of ventilation system does not work as it should.

One of those reasons could be that the duct work which connects to the fan does not reach to the exterior of the home, but rather, only reaches into the attic space.  Although this might not affect the bathroom itself, it can be doing a lot of damage to the attic by producing an environment which promotes decaying of attic materials and even mold.

Another simple reason that a bathroom exhaust fan will stop functioning properly is that dirt and dust can clog it up.  The easy fix for this is to clean it thoroughly.

There are some ways to tell if your bathroom exhaust fan is not working, too much moisture on the bathroom walls is one indication, also you might see paint bubbling or peeling due to high levels of humidity, metal bathroom fixtures might also begin to corrode.  If you are concerned about any of these signs in your bathroom, please feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to advise you.
