Disasters can happen anytime and anywhere. Of course, there are times and places that make a certain type of disaster more likely than another, but they all have one thing in common. With advance warning and planning, their impact can be much less than when they come upon us unexpected.
While your safety and that of your family always should be your first concern, it is only natural to worry about your property and whether you will come back home to a smoldering ruin or to a home that is in the same shape you left it.
What can you do when a disaster is impending to minimize possible damage to your home? First, your water should be shut off at the main valve. A leaking water pipe can cause major damage over a short period of time. Your electricity should also be shut off at the main breaker to minimize the risk of a fire starting. Along with that, you should shut of your main gas line, since a gas leak could have disastrous consequences.
