Do you know how hot the water from your water heater is? It can vary somewhat, but in general, it will be between 120 and 160 degrees depending on how you have it set.
At 160 degrees it will only take a few seconds before you are scalded, and there are many young children and elderly that need to visit the emergency room every year due to burns from water that is too hot. These groups are especially vulnerable because of their sensitive skin and sometimes limited realization of danger.
To prevent water from getting too hot, an anti-scald valve can be installed. This value will mix the hot and cold water to keep it at a safe temperature
If you don't have an anti-scald valve, you can install it either at individual faucets, or near the water heater to cover your whole home. Of course, if your water heater is set too high to start with, you might want to start by turning down the temperature.
