Do you know where one of the most common locations of heat loss in a home is? It is around your doors and windows. When windows get old, seals start failing and cracking, leading to air leaks that can add quite a bit in additional heating and cooling costs. Many times though, you can do some simple, fast fixes to make sure that your windows aren’t costing you money.
If you have cracks or rot around your window, you want to repair this as soon as possible, and the more thorough of a job you do, the longer your repairs will last. Removing rot from a wooden window frame needs to be done completely. Leaving just a little bit of rot behind will let it spread and do damage to the window once again. After you have dug it out completely, you can fill the gap in well using wood filler or a similar material.
If you have cracks around your window, use caulk and weather stripping to fill them in.
